Lamar Odom has been found unconscious following a suspected drink and drug binge in a brothel in Las Vegas and is now struggling to stay alive. The 35-year-old former basketball star is reportedly in critical condition after an ambulance took him from the Love Ranch, Nevada.
The initial emergency call was made by Mitzi John, a Love Ranch employee, who said that Odom was unconscious and in need of an ambulance.
Odom played in the Los Angeles Lakers championship teams in 2009 and 2010. He also helped the United States win a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
“Lamar Odom is a long-time member of the Excel family, and we are keeping him in our thoughts and prayers. We are staying close to the situation but have no additional information or comment at this time,” Jeff Schwartz, Excel Sports Management president, said in a statement.
At 12 years old, Odom had to deal with the premature death of his mother, Cathy Mercer, who died from cancer of the colon. His father was a drug addict and they did not have a close relationship. He claims that was the time he started playing basketball “all day” and does not even come home to eat.
In 2006, Odom had to deal with the death of his 6-month-old son Jayden, who died from SIDS while he was sleeping in his crib in New York.
Nye County, Nevada, Sheriff Sharon Wehrly stated that investigators were seeking a warrant in order to obtain a blood sample to determine whether Lamar Odom has suffered a drug or alcohol overdose.
Wehrly said investigators have until Wednesday to collect of evidence and conduct interviews with employees at the brothel where Odom was found. She said she could not immediately say what they believe caused the former NBA player and reality star to become unconscious.
